ABSTRACT:
Laser reflector with reduced electric field intensity having a substrate having an optically smooth surface with a multilayer thin film optical coating disposed on the surface. The coating is comprised of high and low index layers formed in first and second groups with the first group being formed of layers having optical thicknesses substantially equal to one quarter of the wave length of the laser beam and the second group being formed of layers having optical thicknesses which are substantially different from one quarter of the wave length of the laser beam in which .theta. is the phase thickness of the low index layer defined by the equation ##EQU1## AND .phi. IS THE PHASE THICKNESS OF THE HIGH INDEX LAYER DEFINED BY THE EQUATION ##EQU2## WHERE R IS THE AMPLITUDE OF REFLECTANCE AT THE OUTERMOST SURFACE OF THE FIRST GROUP OF LAYERS FOR THE FIRST PAIR OF LAYERS IN THE SECOND GROUP OF LAYERS AND AT THE OUTERMOST SURFACE OF THE PRECEDING PAIR OF LAYERS FOR EACH SUCCEEDING PAIR OF LAYERS IN THE SECOND GROUP OF LAYERS AS DETERMINED FROM WITHIN THE ADDED LOW INDEX LAYER OF THE SECOND GROUP OF LAYERS, WHERE F IS (N.sub.1 -N.sub.2)/(N.sub.1 +N.sub.2) WHERE N.sub.1 IS THE REFRACTIVE INDEX OF THE LOW INDEX MATERIAL, AND N.sub.2 IS THE REFRACTIVE INDEX OF THE HIGH INDEX MATERIAL AND WHERE U=R COS2.theta. AND V=-R SIN2.theta..
