L-cysteine derivatives of formula ##STR1## in which R is a lower alkoxycarbonyl or carboxy group, and salts thereof. The compounds have been found to have a mucolytic activity and low toxicity. Processes for the preparation of the compounds and medicaments containing them are described and exemplified.
