ABSTRACT:
The disclosure relates to flexible heat expanding, fire retardant composite materials comprising an intumescent component in granular form, an organic binder component such as an elastomer, an organic char-forming component and fillers such as clay, silica, synthetic organic staple fibers or inorganic fiberglass or ceramic fibers. These composites, when subjected to heat at about 110.degree. C., can intumesce up to ten times their original volume.
