ABSTRACT:
This invention relates to molecular modification of hemoglobin by utilizan of a class of .alpha., .omega.-dialdelhydes having a chain length of 5 to 7 members and substituted with at least one negatively charged group such as a phosphate moiety. A subject .alpha., .omega.-dialdehyde can be synthesized by sodium periodate oxidation of a phosphorylated ribose such as adenosine-5'-triphosphate or 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate. The compounds of this invention can be advantageously used for intramolecularly crosslinking hemoglobin for resuscitative purposes.
