ABSTRACT:
A light projection device suitable for use on aircraft instruement panels includes a light source contained within a housing. The housing is mounted to the instrument panel adjacent a gauge to be illuminated. The housing has an extension thereon which projects toward the adjacent gauge, and through which light is projected. Contained within the housing extension is a light redirection device having a graded transmissibility function. The graded transmissibility of this redirection device causes a higher proportion of light projected from the device to be directed to the far side of the gauge. This graded transmissibility function provides for more even illumination over the surface of the gauge. The graded light redirection device may be, for example, a Fresnel lens having selected optical properties.
