ABSTRACT:
An inner seal assembly for a pair of opposed ram bodies (12, 14) of a ram-type blowout preventer (10) includes an elastomeric packer (22) and a resilient insert (23). Resilient insert (23) has a plurality of lugs (58) which fit within indentations (36) in a recess (34) formed by the packer (22) and guide insert (23) into an accurate position within the packer (22) for securement to the packer (22) by separate fasteners (56). The insert (23) has an arcuate length of around 190.degree. and extends radially inwardly of the packer (22) in an open position a distance (D1) of at least around 1/16 inch to provide a marginal wear portion.
