ABSTRACT:
A solid ink loader for use with a phase change ink printer is provided. The ink loader comprises a push block for contacting and urging an ink stick along a feed channel; an arm pivotally mounted in the push block which directs a beam of light based on the pivot angle; a light emitter for emitting a light beam which can be directed by the arm; and a sensing system for receiving the light beam directed by the arm and determining a position of the push block along the feed channel based on a characteristic of the directed light beam. The position of the push block in the feed channel corresponds to an amount of ink remaining in the feed channel.
