ABSTRACT:
An infrared and ultraviolet ray absorbing glass suitable for use in building and vehicle windows, which comprises, on a weight basis, 68-72% SiO.sub.2, 1.6-3.0% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 8.5-11.0% CaO, 2.0-4.2% MgO, 12.0-16.0% Na.sub.2 O, 0.5-3.0% K.sub.2 O, 0.08-0.30% SO.sub.3, 0.58-0.80% total iron expressed as Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0.10-0.60% CeO.sub.2, 0.10-0.40% TiO.sub.2 and 5-350 ppm MnO. In the glass the ratio of ferrous iron to ferric iron is from 0.3 to 0.7. The glass has a greenish tint and is well balanced in visible light transmittance, infrared radiation absorption and ultraviolet radiation absorption. The glass can easily be produced as a sheet glass by the conventional float process without significantly varying the melting and refining operation conditions, and the glass sheet can readily be tempered by a conventional method.
