ABSTRACT:
An image density detecting device for an image forming apparatus includes a light diffusing member made of a transparent resin. The light diffusing member has a substantially rectangular sectional profile, with the longitudinal dimension thereof greater than the width of the document, and it is disposed below the document such that it extends in the width direction thereof. The side of the light diffusing member opposite its light receiving surface constitutes a diffusing reflecting surface which is formed by forming blade-like notches on this side. A photodiode is embedded in the end face of the light diffusing member on the side thereof opposite the ends of the blade-like notches.
Light reflected by a portion of the document between the opposite edges thereof is received on the light receiving surface of the light diffusing member and is focusedly reflected by the diffusing reflecting surface toward the end face on the side of the photodiode to be detected thereby.
