ABSTRACT:
An illumination optical system for microscopes is constructed so that in a transmissive Kohler illumination optical system having a light source, a condenser lens system, and an aperture stop, the condenser lens system includes, in order from the side of incidence of light, a first lens unit having a positive lens and a negative lens, with a positive power as a whole, and a second lens unit having a negative lens and a positive lens, with a positive power as a whole. The aperture stop is placed between the first and second lens units, and the illumination optical system satisfies the condition:
