ABSTRACT:
This invention relates to a process for preparing highly active hydrotreating catalysts prepared by incorporating an element selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and mixtures thereof, a heavy metal selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten and mixtures thereof, and a stabilizing amount of phosphorus into an alumina hydrogel. The final calcined catalysts have surface areas at least about 300 m.sup.2 /g, at least about 20% of the pore volume in pores having diameters greater than about 350 .ANG. and at least about 20% of the pore volume in pores having diameters less than about 70 .ANG..
