ABSTRACT:
Catalysts for hydrotreating of petroleum refinery feedstocks are prepared by impregnating an aqueous solution of Group VI metal compound and Group VIII metal compound in solution with HBF.sub.4 on catalyst support of alumina or alumina with silica. In preferred embodiments, oxides of molybdenum and nickel in solution with HBF.sub.4, and optionally also with H.sub.3 PO.sub.4, are impregnated on alumina and calcined to finish the catalyst. Catalysts so prepared are used in hydrotreating to reduce nitrogen content of oil feedstocks.
