ABSTRACT:
A contact lens which when saturated with water has oxygen permeability of greater than 500 centibarrers and a receding contact angle with water of less than 35.degree.. The lens is formed of a polymer containing from 20 to 80 weight percent of repeating units of the structure ##STR1## where --R is --H or CH.sub.3 and R.sub.1 contains from 2 to 10 carbon atoms and at least one polar group. In a preferred aspect --R.sub.1 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --CH.sub.2 CHOHCH.sub.3. The polymer also contains from 80 to 20 weight percent of repeating units of the structure ##STR2## where --R.sub.2 is --H or --CH.sub.3 and n is 1 to 4.
