ABSTRACT:
A hydraulic breech mechanism uses a sealed reservoir of fluid to rigidly support the bolt6against barrel2resisting pressure generated by discharging a cartridge in chamber3. Recoil forces cause the high pressure cylinder7and barrel assembly2and4to move relative to the sleeve valve8opening communication between reservoirs9and11. This and subsequent bolt travel displace floating piston12compressing spring13. During bolt opening any cartridge in chamber3will be ejected. With the firing load removed from the bolt6the floating piston12under influence of spring13will pump fluid into the high pressure reservoir9, closing the bolt and chambering any round in the loading port. Continued load from spring13now returns the high pressure cylinder7and barrel assembly2and4to the original position relative to the sleeve valve locking bolt6ready for the next cycle.
