ABSTRACT:
A workpiece of a highly heat-resistant steel containing nickel or of a nickel-base alloy is provided with a hard coating containing titanium. An intermediate layer of an intermetallic phase Ni.sub.3 Ti intervenes between the core material and the hard coating. The deposition of the intermediate layer of the hard coating is achieved by means of separation in a gaseous phase.
