ABSTRACT:
The reaction of hydrogen and carbon oxides (carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide) to form methane at temperatures above 500.degree.C is promoted by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a molten metal salt-based catalyst system comprising a molten metal salt carrier selected from the class consisting of the halides and carbonates of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals and the halides of zinc, copper, manganese, cadmium, tin and iron, and mixtures thereof, melting below 1000.degree.C; said molten salt having dispersed therein one or more catalytically active metals selected from the class consisting of iron, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, cobalt, zinc, titanium silver, copper and thorium in the form of finely divided elemental metals, metal oxides and/or metal carbides.
