ABSTRACT:
Herbicidal compounds, compositions containing them, and a method for controlling weeds by application of the compositions are disclosed. The herbicidal compounds are N-aryl tetrahydrophthalimides of the formula ##STR1## in which Z is O, S, NH or alkylamino; Q is --[O--CH(R.sup.4a)CO].sub.m --OCH(R.sup.4)Q.sup.2 ; Q.sup.2 is --C(O)R.sup.3 or --CN; M is CH or N; R.sup.4 and R.sup.4a are independently H, C.sub.2 H.sub.5 or CH.sub.3 ; R.sup.3 is OH, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkenyloxy or alkynyloxy, amino, phenylamino, alkylamino, alkenylamino, alkynylamino, alkoxyamino or alkyl-, haloalkyl- or arylsulfonylamino of the formula --NHSO.sub.2 R.sup.5 or --N(SO.sub.2 R.sup.5)SO.sub.2 R.sup.6, or an --O--N.dbd.R.sup.7 radical where R.sup.7 is alkylidene; R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are indendently alkyl, haloalkyl or phenyl which is unsubsituted or substituted with alkoxy or halogen; m is zero or 1; R.sup.1 is H, alkyl, halogen, haloalkyl, nitro, NH.sub.2, alkoxy or alkylthio, or cyano; X is H, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl or nitro; and Y is H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, haloalkyl, --SOCF.sub.3 or haloalkoxy.
