A bed14has a base frame32,an elevatable frame34and a telescopable column36having a base segment36aconnected to the base frame32and a terminal segment36econnected to the elevate able frame34.Each column circumscribes a lift chain assembly100which includes a magazine102and a lift chain160with a terminal link240.The magazine102is connected to either the base frame32or the elevate able frame34and the terminal link240is connected to the other of the base frame32and the elevate able frame34.The magazine102comprises left and right magazine covers104, 106each having an outer face and an inner face112, 114with grooves120.The lift chain160has left and right rollers238that project into the grooves. The lift chain assembly100also includes a gear train320extending from a gear train drive shaft334to a gear train output shaft338and a motor278having an output shaft314connected to the gear train drive shaft334.
