ABSTRACT:
A signal processing system for hearing aids estimates the absolute quantity of noise in each of a plurality of frequency bands. The audio gains are adjusted so as to minimize the effect of upward spread of masking, wherein noise in lower frequency bands decreases the intelligibility of speech sounds in higher frequency bands. The noise level in each frequency band is estimated by monitoring the amplitude distribution of sound events in that frequency band.
