ABSTRACT:
The invention relates to stilbene compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is halogen, R is hydrogen, --SO.sub.3 M, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy and M is hydrogen or a salt-forming cation. These compounds are starting materials for obtaining known fluorescent whitening agents of the 4,4'-distyrylbiphenyl series.
