Hair care formulations for cleansing the scalp and hair follicle openings are disclosed which comprises black cohosh extract, and a surfactant selected from the group consisting of sodium C.sub.14-16 olefin sulfonate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and combinations thereof
