ABSTRACT:
A method of making grafted polyalphaolefin polymer comprising providing (a) an aluminum compound having the formula R.sub.3 Al.sub.2 X.sub.3 or R.sub.n AlX.sub.3-n, wherein R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 aralkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 alkaryl or C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl; X is Cl, Br or I, an n is an integer from 1 to 3; (b) a polyhalogenated compound having the formula (--CH.sub.2 CR.sup.1 R.sup.2).sub.m y.sub.p, wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl; R.sup.2 is linear or branched C.sub.2 -C.sub.30 alkyl; Y is Cl, Br or I; m is an integer from 3 to 3000; and p is an integer of at least 3; and (c) a cationically polymerizable monomer having the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sup.1 R.sup.2, wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 have the meanings above; and (B) bringing into contact above (a), (b) and (c) under polymerization conditions.
