ABSTRACT:
An apparatus for compressing gaseous fluid including a reciprocating compressor and a receiver or tank connected with the compressor for receiving the compressed gaseous fluid. The compressor includes one or more cylinders supported on a crankcase having a rotating crankshaft therein with throws connected by connecting rods with pistons reciprocating in the cylinders. Discharge valves are reciprocably mounted at ends of the cylinders and are of a size substantially that of the cross-section of the cylinder bore and opening in response to pressure in the respective cylinders. The crankcase has compartments for each cylinder with intake ports for entry of gaseous fluid into the crankcase whereby the compartments are intake chambers with communication from the crankcase compartment to the respective cylinder by an intake valve in said piston, said intake valve having opening and closing movement in response to pressure differential between the cylinder and crankcase, a resilient member providing a small closing pressure for said valves. The crankshaft has throws and counterbalances cooperating with a crankcase shape and size and the intake ports for facilitating movement of gaseous fluid such as air into the crankcase for crankcase compression and movement by the intake valve into the cylinder providing a compressor adapted to operate at a range of speeds wherein the out-put is a high volume and varies substantially directly with the RPM of the compressor.
