ABSTRACT:
A process for the removal of H.sub.2 S from sour gaseous streams is disclosed, the process being characterized by the use of solutions containing vanadium V-containing ions and phosphate ions in sufficient amount to convert the H.sub.2 S to elemental sulfur. The process may be cyclic, allowing for continuous operation. A composition suitable for use in the process is also disclosed.
