ABSTRACT:
A method to functionalize carbohydrate derivatives by base-induced .beta.-elimination and subsequent olefination to form biologically active products containing .alpha.-hydroxy-diene or .alpha.,.beta.-dihydroxy-diene subunits. Also disclosed are methods to prepare biologically active derivatives of fatty acids containing .alpha.-hydroxy-diene groups and .alpha.,.beta.-dihydroxy-diene groups from derivatives of 2-deoxyfuranoses and derivatives of 2-deoxypyranoses, respectively.
