ABSTRACT:
A fuel property, i.e., ordinary fuel, heavy fuel or mixture of both, is determined using an engine rotations. After an engine temperature exceeds 0.degree. C. and an engine attains a complete combustion, an engine speed is integrated. It is determined whether a deviation between the integrated value of the engine speed and an integrated value of a set engine speed is larger than a predetermined determination value. As a result, it can be determined whether the fuel fed to the internal combustion engine has a volatility identical to that of the ordinary fuel, so that the fuel properties can be highly accurately determined.
