ABSTRACT:
A friction pad for use in a friction engagement device such as a brake or clutch. The friction pad includes a friction lining, a sensor and an actuator. The sensor senses an operating condition such as pressure applied to the friction lining and emits a signal that is directly or indirectly sent to the actuator. The actuator changes shape in response to the signal and thereby causes a change in the structure of the friction pad.
