An ink for use in ink jet printing has as its coloring material a dye having the formula: ##STR1## where R is --OCH.sub.2 CO.sub.2.sup.-, --CH.sub.2 CO.sub.2.sup.-, --PO.sub.3.sup.= or --CH.sub.2 --PO.sub.3.sup.=.
