ABSTRACT:
Filtering face mask10has a mask body12and an exhalation valve14.The mask body12is adapted to fit over the nose and mouth of a person, and the exhalation valve14is attached to the mask body12.The exhalation valve14has a valve seat26and a single flexible flap24.The valve seat26includes a seal surface31and an orifice32.The orifice32is circumscribed by the seal surface31.The single flexible flap24has a fixed portion28and one free portion38.The one free portion38has a free end, and the fixed portion28is located off-center of the flexible flap24away from the free end and is secured to the valve seat26outside the orifice32.The one free portion38is pressed toward the seal surface31when the wearer is neither inhaling or exhaling. The free portion38can be lifted from the seal surface31during an exhalation. Because the flexible flap24is mounted to the valve seat off-center and outside the orifice32and yet is pressed towards the valve seat26when the wearer is not inhaling or exhaling, the face mask10can demonstrate a lower air flow resistance force during an exhalation which enables the exhalation valve14to open easier, and it can remain closed under any static orientation of the valve14to prevent contaminants from entering the mask interior.
