ABSTRACT:
The use of a material of empirical composition MgO(CO.sub.2).sub.b (H.sub.2 O).sub.c, where b is any value in the range 0.5 to 1.1 and c is any value in the range 0 to 2, and which have an amorphous content of at least 75% by weight, as a filler and/or a fire retardant for a solid or fluid matrix, a solid or fluid matrix (in particular a plastics matrix) containing such a material as dispersed particles, the materials in defined particulate morphologies, some of the materials per se and a process for their preparation.
