ABSTRACT:
A power assisted steering system for a vehicle having an operator controlled steering mechanism connected directly to at least one steered wheel of the vehicle and a bidirectional electric motor. The motor is connected to the steering shaft via a gear reduction means. A clutch is interposed between the motor and the gear reduction means to connect and disconnect the motor armature from the steering shaft. The clutch includes first and second coaxial clutch halves, the first clutch half being connected to the output of the motor, the second clutch half being axially connected to the ratio reduction means. A control circuit senses rotation of the steering mechanism by the operator and controls the direction and speed of rotation of the motor. The control circuit also monitors the operation of the system, and when the system is operating properly, causes the clutch to engage so that torque from the motor is transmitted, through the ratio reduction means, to the steering shaft. When the system is not operating properly, the control circuit operates to disengage the clutch thereby effectively isolating the motor from the steering shaft.
