ABSTRACT:
Substantially purified mature T cells, including .alpha..beta. T cells and .gamma..delta. T cells, are capable of binding to an extracellular matrix protein, particularly to one or more of a collagen, a fibronectin, a laminin, a fibrinogen, or a proteoglycan. Also, compositions including the substantially purified ECM binding mature T cells, for use in adoptive immunotherapy in a subject. Also, methods for treating a condition in a mammal, including administering to the mammal an effective quantity of the substantially purified ECM binding mature T cells, and treatment methods using the compositions. Also, methods for increasing the proportion, in a cell population, of substantially purified ECM binding mature T cells. Also, a method for assessing the likelihood that a mixture of cells contains activated T cells capable of localizing to a site in vivo, wherein an extracellular matrix protein is present at the site, in which greater binding of T cells to an extracellular matrix protein on a support in vivo indicates a greater likelihood that a mixture of cells contains activated T cells capable of localizing to the site in vivo.
