ABSTRACT:
An internal combustion engine wherein an SOXtrap catalyst (11) able to trap SOXcontained in exhaust gas is arranged in an engine exhaust passage upstream of an NOXstoring catalyst (12). When the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the SOXtrap catalyst (11) is switched from lean to rich to make the NOXstoring catalyst (12) release the NOX, if the temperature of the SOXtrap catalyst (11) is the SOXrelease lower limit temperature or more, rich processing making the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the SOXtrap catalyst (11) rich for making the NOXstoring catalyst (12) release NOXis prohibited.
