ABSTRACT:
A method and system of determining a handoff timing parameter based on the call category such as location and mobility class of a group of mobile wireless device is disclosed. The method includes the feedback of certain information by some mobile wireless device to the base station. This feedback information provides an indication on the condition of the forward link channel connecting the mobile wireless device to the base station (sector). The base station can thus make more intelligent decisions on the handoff parameters. Further, as the channel conditions vary significantly for mobile wireless devices at different locations of a cell, traveling with different speeds, different values for the handoff timing parameters are desirable to better optimize the network as a whole. Mobile wireless devices that may not have the capability to adapt can also be benefited from this system.
