In the variable valve timing system according to the present invention, portions of the intake-side advancing hydraulic line and a retarding hydraulic line respectively constitute annular grooves104and113for advancing and retarding provided on the intake camshaft5bearing surface5aof the cam cap4which supports the camshafts5and6. In addition, portions of the advancing hydraulic line and the retarding hydraulic line for exhaust respectively constitute annular grooves for advancing and retarding123and133provided on the exhaust camshaft6bearing surface4bof the cam cap4. Moreover, the annular groove for retarding113on the intake camshaft5bearing surface4aand the annular groove for advancing123on the exhaust camshaft6bearing surface4bare respectively provided in the center in the width direction of their respective bearing surfaces4aand4b.
