ABSTRACT:
An engine speed control apparatus controls the rotational speed of an engine when the engine is overloaded. The engine speed control apparatus includes a fuel injection rate detecting circuit for detecting the rate at which fuel is injected by a fuel injection unit, an engine speed detecting circuit for detecting the rotational speed of the engine, a fuel injection condition determining circuit for determining whether the rate detected by the fuel injection rate detecting circuit is substantially a maximum rate or not, a speed condition determining circuit for determining whether the rotational speed detected by the engine speed detecting circuit is increasing at least a predetermined rate of change or not, and an overload condition determining circuit for producing an engine overload signal to reduce the load driven by the engine if the rate is determined as substantially the maximum rate by the fuel injection condition determining circuit and also if the rotational speed is determined as not increasing at least at the predetermined rate of change by the speed condition determining circuit.
