An emergency alarm system is disclosed as including a base unit9, adapted to be installed in an architectural structure at an area attracting public attention, which incorporates a temperature sensor29, a gas sensor31, a sound sensor33and a vibration sensor35and includes a transmitter39, a receiver41, a sound generator37and a display board27; a mobile handset23, carried by a person for self-defense, which incorporates a temperature sensor51and a gas sensor53and includes a transmitter59, a receiver61, a sound generator55and a light source57; and infrared ray sensors13, installed in respective rooms in the architectural structure, which incorporates a temperature sensor69and a gas sensor71and includes a transmitter73; wherein when one of the sensors of the base unit9, the mobile handset23and the infrared ray sensors13detects an abnormal signal under an emergency condition, the base unit9, the mobile handset23and the infrared ray sensors13mutually communicate with each other through the associated transmitters and receivers.
