ABSTRACT:
An industrial type friction brake having a pair of brake shoes engageable with opposite sides of a brake drum. The brake has levers and pivots arranged to automatically cause the brake shoes to simultaneously engage the brake drum and maintain the distance the brake shoes move constant to compensate for misalignment of the brake shoes and wear of the brake linings. The components of the brake are arranged so that all adjustable components are located at the top of the brake and the magnet coil or brake shoes may be removed for replacement purposes without disturbing any of the levers of the brake. Additionally, the brake is provided wth means to minimize the possibility of injury to persons during replacement of the brake drum and includes an inexpensive manually operable means to manually release the brake shoes from their engagement with the brake drum.
