ABSTRACT:

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy and, more particularly, to an electrolyte solution having high conductivity and high breakdown voltage.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an electrolyte suitable for activating an electrolytic or electrochemical capacitor. The electrolyte has a solvent which includes water and ethylene glycol having an ammonium salt dissolved therein. An acid or acids is used as an additive to achieve the appropriate pH, conductivity, and breakdown voltage for a particular capacitor application.
An exemplary capacitor includes an anode of a base metal such as aluminum or tantalum provided with an oxidized surface. The oxidized anode surface is a dielectric layer typically formed by an anodizing process. The thusly formed anode is electrochemically associated with a cathode having a separator disposed there between and activated with the present electrolyte. The electrolyte has a relatively high conductivity and breakdown voltage, which ensures that the capacitor exhibits low series resistance.
