ABSTRACT:
A coated EDM wire electrode and a process for manufacturing a coated EDM wire electrode. The core of the electrode is composed of a first metal, for instance copper, or an alloy of a first metal, for instance brass, or a composite of a first metal, for instance copper clad steel. The core is coated with a second metal which has a heat of vaporization of less than 35 KJ/cm.sup.3, such as, for instance zinc. The coated core is then heated to form an alloy of the second metal and the first metal, for instance .gamma. phase brass. The alloy has a content by weight of the second metal greater than 50% and has a melting point equal to or greater than 550.degree. C.
