ABSTRACT:
A process for the preparation of keto steroids by electrochemical reduction, comprising electrolyzing a .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated keto steroid in a nonaqueous nitrogen-containing solvent containing an electrolyte which is at least one of:
A. a quaternary ammonium salt of the general formula NR.sub.1 R.sub.2 R.sub.3 R.sub.4 X, wherein R.sub.1.sub.+4 represent an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl residue, or
B. an alkali or alkaline earth salt of X, wherein X is sufficient anion for charge equalization and represents halogen, tetrafluoborate, sulfate, perchlorate, alcoholate, arylsulfonate or alkylsulfonate.
