ABSTRACT:
An electrochemical cell for the detection of hydrogen sulfide which includes a gold working electrode and a counter electrode, with or without a reference electrode, comprising either gold or platinum black which operate in a substantially non-aqueous electrolyte consisting preferably of lithium perchlorate dissolved in an organic solvent selected from the group consisting of .gamma.butyrolactone and propylene carbonate. A fixed potential is maintained between the working electrode and a referenced air electrode of between 300 to 1100 mv, and, preferably, between 500 and 1000 mv.
