The present invention concerns a dual gain antenna system100with an integrated system to control a matching network214.The dual gain antenna system100comprises an antenna that includes a first helically shaped antenna element104,a second vertical antenna element106,and a base portion101.The first antenna element104is disposed around a longitudinal axis of a dielectric rod102that contains a bore205.The second antenna element106is disposed within the longitudinal axis of the dielectric rod bore205.A sensor215detects when the second antenna element106is in the extended position and transmits a control signal to a matching system214that selectively controls the impedance matching network214between the antenna and the RF feed line103.
