The present invention provides a drum type refining or washing apparatus in which the refining or washing efficiency of a pulp suspension or a food suspension is remarkably enhanced by the filtration function of a rotary drum and by the filtrate sucking force of a filtrate receptive cell.A drum type refining or washing apparatus in which a filtrate receptive chamber34facing the outer peripheral surface of a rotary drum1which is laterally installed, is defined by a plurality of filtrate receptive cells31arranged in the peripheral direction of the rotary drum1, each filtrate receptive cell31being provided at one end thereof on the side opposite to the rotating direction of the rotary drum1with a discharge port32for discharging the filtrate received in the filtrate receptive chamber34of the filtrate receptive cell31through the rotary drum forming wall into the liquid vessel11, the filtrate in the filtrate receptive chamber34of the filtrate receptive cell31being discharged in the liquid vessel11through the discharge port32during an escaping process of the filtrate receptive cell31onto the liquid surface17of the liquid vessel11in accordance with rotation of the rotary drum1, discharge of the filtrate causing generation of a filtrate sucking force directing toward the inside of the filtrate receptive chamber34at the rotary drum forming wall which the filtrate receptive chamber34of the filtrate receptive cell31faces.
