ABSTRACT:
A disc brake assembly having enhanced brake efficiency and improved cooling includes a brake pad having arcuate upper and lower edges and a width that diminishes along its length from its leading edge to its trailing edge. A braking force is exerted on the brake pad by plural hydraulic actuators having pistons aligned with longitudinally spaced portions of the brake pad. The radial and circumferential locations of such portions are selected to minimize differences in the radial wear of the brake pad. The actuators are preferably symmetrically positioned with respect to a brake rotor centerline but may be positioned asymmetrically. The actuator pistons are confined for movement within close tolerances in order to limit the angle though which the brake pads can rock. Each brake pad is removably mounted on a pad carrier plate and cooperating sloping edges on the pad and on flanges on the carrier plate are used to hold the pad on the carrier plate and enable both the quick assembly and the quick disassembly of the pad and the carrier plate. The brake caliper includes a spacer assembly made from a stack of shims and having an internal air chamber opening to both cylinder housings for cooling. The air chamber is open to the front by plural air inlets and to the rear by plural air outlets. The inlets and outlets are offset from one another so that air entering the inlets must travel laterally before exiting through the outlets.
