Described is a method for repelling insects by use of oxymethyl cyclohexane derivatives of the structure ##STR1## wherein Z is methylene; n is 0 or 1; each of the wavy lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond or no bond; the dashed line represents a carbon-carbon double bond or a carbon-carbon single bond; each of R.sub.2, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are the same or different and each represents hydrogen or methyl; and R.sub.1 represents hydrogen, acetyl or ethoxycarbonyl with the provisos:
