ABSTRACT:
An auxiliary transfer passage is offset from the trajectory along which fuel is injected so as to be located downstream of the trajectory with respect to the direction of swirl within the swirl chamber and which is sized to have a cross-sectional area with respect to the main transfer passage and the cylinder bore in which the main combustion chamber is defined so as to simultaneously minimize smoke and NO.sub.x formation.
