ABSTRACT:
A diesel engine having a turbulent combustion chamber, a cylinder bore, a piston reciprocatingly accommodated within the cylinder bore and defining a primary combustion chamber in cooperation with the cylinder bore, a connecting throat defined therein for communicating between the primary chamber and the turbulent chamber, and a fuel injection nozzle for injecting fuel into the turbulent chamber. The turbulent chamber is constituted by an inclined flat bottom wall and a generally spherical wall, and at least a portion of the flat bottom wall is positioned inwardly of the sphere generally represented by the spherical wall with its periphery inwardly curved and continued to the spherical wall. The connecting throat has one end opening into the turbulent chamber and the other end opening into the primary chamber, the opening of the one end of the throat being larger than that of the other end of the throat, having its substantially intermediate portion increasing in effective cross-sectional surface area in a direction towards the turbulent chamber.
