ABSTRACT:
A device for judging the deterioration of a three-way catalyst comprising an upstream O.sub.2 sensor and a downstream O.sub.2 sensor which are arranged in the exhaust passage upstream and downstream of the three-way catalyst, respectively. The deterioration of the three-way catalyst is judged in a predetermined narrow operating region based on the output of these O.sub.2 sensors. A learning value is set for control of the air-fuel ratio for the predetermined narrow operating region separate from the other operating regions.
