ABSTRACT:
A low cost, disposable device for in vitro determination of bleeding time is detachably connectable to the end of a syringe. The device includes a hollow body having inlet and outlet ports and a detachable cover designed to hold a tissue-simulating membrane against the body. Openings are formed in the body and cover to expose the membrane to blood that is passed through the hollow body under pressure from the syringe. Blood flows through a slit in the membrane until it clots. Bleeding time is determined as the time elapsed before the blood stops flowing through the slit. A blood collection reservoir is provided about the body to collect blood discharged from the device to reduce health risks associated with handling blood.
